The South African Department of Health has updated the vaccination schedule for people aged 50 years and older to be eligible for an additional booster dose of Pfizer vaccine with effect from Monday, 06 June 2022.
On March 29, 2022 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorised a second booster dose of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or the Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for older people and certain immunocompromised individuals.
Following FDA’s regulatory action, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated its recommendations to allow certain immunocompromised individuals and people over the age of 50 who received an initial booster dose at least 4 months ago to be eligible for another mRNA booster to increase their protection against severe disease from COVID-19.
This additional booster is available to all people 50 years or older who have completed at least 120 days or 4 months since they received their last Covid-19 vaccination of either Pfizer or J&J.
Pfizer vaccine has shown to be safe and effective for boosting immunity in older persons who remain at highest risk of severe disease and death from Covid.
