A chain of poisoning – Rat poisons kill more than just rats: The unintended consequences of rat poison use in urban areas. Read more:

Besides that it is totally inefficient and inhumane to poison rats:
Rats have food neophobia: they test new food before eating it. They have developed a ‘testing mode‘ where they “eat a small amount and wait before consuming more, thus are able to detect poisoned baits while minimising risk”.  It’s like a taster, testing the effects of the novel food before it gets accepted as safe.
– Rats display a high level of bait-shyness: They learn and remember the effects – bad as well as good – that foods have on them. The other rats observe and as a result the actual rat clan is not affected by the poison.
– Poison that beats this clever clan protection is cruel beyond measure: it causes a prolonged death from internal bleeding and is considered inhumane.
– If a rat dies as a result of poisoning, it’s probably somewhere inaccessible and thus smelly and unhygienic.

It is also incredible harmful to other animals, often more so than the impact to the rats:
 – Rat poison may threaten the survival of local wildlife in the Cape Peninsula
– Rat poison claims the lives of mountain lions and protected bobcats in California
– Rat poison might cause the decline of the hedgehog population in the UK
– Rat poison can be fatal for dogs and cats
– Rat poison kills birds
The list just goes on, including many cases of children falling victim to rat poison. Why take such a risk?

Using poison is simply lazy and only a temporary solution. There are better ways to combat rats:
 – Clean up after yourself! It’s your waste that rats feed off.
Seal off the entry points: How did the rat manage to get in in the first place? Probably because of poor building maintenance. Fix the cause, not the symptom.
– Use a live trap if you have to capture rats and release them in the wild. Even though it’s debated if rats can survive without their clan, you’re at least giving them a chance.
– Use a snap trap if you really have to kill the rat, or go the extra mile and consider raptors as the solution (R.A.T.S.) by supporting the Hungry Owl Project.

BC x Seattle Humane

We are Bellevue College students partnering with Seattle Humane, an impact non-profit organization, with their mission to find homes for the animals in their shelter that are normally considered "unadoptable." Seattle Humane is unlike any animal shelter. They take in animals no matter the breed, age, or physical condition and hold them for as long as it'll take them to find proper homes for these animals. Their hard work and care is exactly what we need to create a better environment for the animals we love. Please follow our instagram page @bcforhumane for more animals in need of a home.
