Monthly Archives: April 2019

I’ve often been to the Concerts in the Park and always had a great time.

I’ve seen Hot Water, Karen Zoid, Lonesome Dave and Arno Carstens a couple of times, Freshly Ground, Dukes of Note and Crimson House.

This time we were again in for a treat with The World of Birds and The Rudimentals.

The World of Birds were uplifting with their local indie tunes:

It was pure joy to watch them dance on the grandstand:

The Rudimentals were up and close:

The Rudimentals with their nine-piece strong ska/reggae band are always a great live music act.

Getting even into the midst of the crowd, having a little dance with the audience:

Concerts in the Park are a great afternoon out. De Waal Park is well equipped with playgrounds and water facilities, a haven for children and puppies alike.

There’s always a great vibe, people are super relaxed, friendly and inviting. A fantastic chilled-out experience.

Having rats as pets is so entertaining: It’s like watching a miniature soap opera unfold.

Rats are so curious, they somehow end up doing mischief. Rats are also very clever, that’s why it’s easy to relate to them.

And of course, rats are very fast, that’s why it’s hardly ever possible to capture these hilarious moments.

Here I managed to snap a moment in the Rats! World:

Pet rat Olive is washing her hands after enjoying her rattie treat. -I always make sure every rat gets a treat equally, so it’s fair and square.- Olive is completely oblivious to being checked out by her sister.

Because some rats eat faster than others, so her sister Sisi is already on the hunt for more. She looks around the corner, smelling still what has long been devoured.

How many times did I see a rattie sneak up on the other to try and steal their food away. It’s an ongoing tug-of-war game.

In addition, doesn’t it look super cute how Olive is wrapped up in the sheep skin blankie? As if she was a tiny sheep herself!

Your rubbish bin being heavy there?

Yes, I must admit, we’re throwing away some pretty bulky stuff. You won’t believe what we’re digging out from our garden. It’s like there’s a whole house buried in our backyard.

But of course! For there used to stand The Broken Palace.

The what?

We used to call it The Broken Palace.

Ha, we used to pass it plenty of times when we were on the run.

That alleyway over there, it was covered with a fishing net. Only we knew how to get through. Very handy when running from the police. Approaching The Broken Palace always meant being safe.

Running from the police?

Yes yes, fond memories. Good times back then.

The City Nature Challenge is coming to Cape Town!

For the first time ever, Cape Town is participating in the City Nature Challenge: an international competition between 150 cities to showcase their fauna and flora by recording observations of all living things.

The challenge is a bioblitz that engages residents and visitors to find and document plants, animals, and other organisms living in urban areas.

The goals are to engage the public in the collection of biodiversity data, with three awards each year for

–  the city that makes the most observations,

–  the city that finds the most species, and

–  the city that engages the most people.

Cape Town boasts of being one of the most biodiverse cities on Earth. Let us prove it and put Cape Town on both the Biodiversity and Citizen Science maps.

Cape Town City Nature Challenge 2019

When: April 26th to 29th

Results will be announced Monday, May 6, so be sure to upload your observations by then!

How:

Join the City Nature Challenge 2019: Cape Town.

Download the iNaturalist app.

Watch How to Make an Observation on iNaturalist using our Mobile App.

How to make observations:

With your phone’s GPS turned on and camera app at the ready, simply roam around the area and snap photos of any plant, animal, fungus, insect, spoor, scat, etc. that you find. Upload your pic on the iNaturalist app and identify it as best as you can – but if you can’t it doesn’t matter, the community will assist. If you don’t have data on your phone, or would prefer to use a DSLR camera, that’s not an issue – you can upload your photos on the iNaturalist desktop website from your home computer.

A few City Nature Challenge rules:

–  No humans or domestic animals (dogs, cats, pet fish, cows, sheep) please. If in doubt, take a photo anyway. Feral animals (i.e. rats, stray cats, pigeons) are fine.

–  Please zoom in as much as possible. If the subject of your photo can’t be seen clearly, it doesn’t count.

–  Only take photos of one species at a time. Don’t take a photo of a whole group of different plants and animals if possible, rather photograph each species individually.

–  If you are at one venue, e.g. the Aquarium’s seal platform, and see many examples of a species there, please include them all as only one observation. If you see the same species again in a different place, it can be a new observation.

–  Only observations within the Cape Town city limits will count, and only from midnight 26 April to midnight 29 April.

Today is Earth Day.

A day to commemorate Mother Earth.

Planet Earth: Just a pile of rubbish

Planet Earth: Just a pile of rubbish

Oh Mother Earth,

What have you become?

Like a whore you bend over for business.

Your mountains are hollow as you sold your soul when handing out those precious stones and metals.

Your springs are dry as you sold your children’s future when handing over clean water to big corporates.

Your seas are empty as you sold all sea life as collateral damage to the fishing trawlers.

Like a sales promotion you promise unsustainable yields.

Your weather is under the weather, your climate out of balance, you destroy what is left with tsunamis, cyclones and tornadoes.

Such a bitch that you only let it rain for rich people. You simply watch as humanity is starving.

And what’s up with that climate change you supposedly got from global warming.

Like a dirty old bag there is no care for you.

Filthy with your layer of plastic rubbish covering your face.

Decadent with oil spillages smudging your coastal beauty.

Preposterous with skyscrapers sprouting up like pimples.

Like scum you let yourself go.

The blue planet turned ash.

The green lungs turned into burgers.

The red sunrise turned hopeless.

Oh Mother Earth,

What have you become.

BC x Seattle Humane

We are Bellevue College students partnering with Seattle Humane, an impact non-profit organization, with their mission to find homes for the animals in their shelter that are normally considered "unadoptable." Seattle Humane is unlike any animal shelter. They take in animals no matter the breed, age, or physical condition and hold them for as long as it'll take them to find proper homes for these animals. Their hard work and care is exactly what we need to create a better environment for the animals we love. Please follow our instagram page @bcforhumane for more animals in need of a home.
