#BrandFail: X (formerly Twitter)

I guess everyone who knows about Twitter, also knows that it’s now known as ‘X’.

However, when people refer to ‘X’, they often add: “Formerly Twitter” or “Previously Twitter”.

X formerly known as Twitter Forbes TrulyJuly

It’s been 2 years since Elon Musk initiated the acquisition of American social media company Twitter, Inc. on April 14, 2022, which finally concluded on October 27, 2022.

Following Twitter’s change in ownership, Musk began referring to the platform as “X/Twitter” and “X (Twitter) and finally confirmed the rebrand on July 23, 2023.

Yet, it seems the adoption of ‘X’ instead of ‘Twitter’ has still not happened:

‘X’ is hardly ever used on it’s own, it’s mostly followed by an explanation that ‘X’ refers to ‘Twitter’.

All over the internet the “Larry the Bird” logo is still very prominent as the shortcut for Twitter.

This comes at no surprise if the platform itself, even though renamed ‘X’, still operates under the twitter url.

Subsequently Twitter experienced a 30% drop in usage from 2023 to 2024.

To rename a perfectly well established, familiar brand for what appears to be Elon Musk’s personal narcistic reasons and then not see it all the way through, is what I call a #BrandFail.
