Part of Ranzani Design’s business model is to create jobs by outsourcing all expert skills to the people who can do it best.

Ranzani Design has the know-how of the production process for its products, but in order to achieve highest quality results it sources the talent from craftspeople who are experts in their field.

The Ranzani Salt & Pepper Grinders require expert craftsmanship for such immaculate wood turning results.

Sometimes these artisans are difficult to find.

That’s because expert craftsmanship is dying out.

Sadly, quite literally, as in a case where a factory pulled out of the work commitment, because the owner had passed away and his children were not up for such an intricate job.

Maybe in times of mass produced plastic products we don’t need these skills anyway.

Or maybe there is something to first needing to learn a trade in order to become a master.

Plagiarism – to use someone else’s work without crediting the source – is sad enough.

To pass off someone’s elses work as one’s own is Intellectual Property infringement.

Such as in this example where Witbank News has not only blatantly stolen the design, but also has the audacity to copyright it as their image!

The owner of the graphic Know Your Lemons has commented on this IP Theft accordingly, but so far with no result:

A grey verification badge confirms a Facebook page as authentic.

Now Facebook is doing away with it for rather obscure reasons: Apparently Facebook ‘found that they can be more confusing than helpful’.

I can not see how a verification badge could ever be confusing. It’s pretty straight forward to combat imposters, and general good practice.

But more over, Facebook goes out of its way to inform us about this moronic decision with a huge red warning banner across the top of the page:

Furthermore, I have 4 (!) notifications popping up in my Settings.

Of course, this triggers me to check them out, and it turns out I have 4 notifications in my Page Support Inbox:

This is rather important I would think, so I better click on my Support Inbox to find out what this is about.

Turns out, nothing, nothing at all is going on, as Facebook, like so often, sends me Pseudo Alerts.

In this case ‘This content is no longer available’!

I can see in the background that this pseudo alert was yet again about removing the grey badge and ‘working on better ways to show which Pages are authentic’.

This is not an alert.

This is merely sending me through a maze of unnecessary notifications about Facebook making a decision for no reason with no idea how to provide an alternative.

It’s dark patterns at work, concluding in a total usability fail.

Thanks for nothing Facebook, for yet again wasting my time with ridiculous Pseudo Alerts.

The Ranzani Salt & Pepper Grinders require expert craftsmanship and professional tooling.

Criteria that are hard to come by in Cape Town.

Thus, the development process of the Ranzani Grinders needs to incorporate finding expert wood turning skills.

While the Ranzani Salt & Pepper Grinders might look simple on the outside, there’s a whole lot more going on inside:

Generally wood turners can accommodate the outside carvings.

But to turn the wood hollow is where most of them already turn down the job.

In addition, the mould needs to be turned out in a very specific form, to fit the milling mechanism precisely.

This is only possible with modern tooling, which is an investment many artisans can’t afford.

Ranzani Design‘s goal is to support local arts and crafts skills.

But with everything being cheaply mass-produced in China, this can turn into a real mission at times.

So it has been a long journey to finally establish a production line that is qualitatively, quantitatively and ethically fulfilling Ranzani Design’s standards.

But where there’s a will there’s a way and we’re very excited to see the new batch of Ranzani Design Salt & Pepper Grinders:

Wow! The bodies for the Ranzani Design Salt & Pepper Grinders look great!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

In a fantastic initiative to create awareness about breast cancer and how to detect it, Know Your Lemons uses lemons to explain what breast cancer can look like:

Touch your lemons!

Cancer has no cure, so in order to combat it, early detection is key.

Generally women self-examining their boobs watch out for lumps, the most common sign of breast cancer.

But there are many other symptoms to watch out for as explained in the Know Your Lemons in 60 seconds video:

Learn how to examine your breasts.

Download this great free resource: ‘3 Steps to Early Detection‘.

Now that you know what to feel for, make sure you touch your boobies regularly, at least once a month in order to know how your breasts usually feel, so you notice if something abnormal crops up.

This applies for both, women and men.

As your pet rats gets older, they are likely to become frail.

Some might start losing weight, even though they eat normally.

Sadly this is a sign that your pet rat is succumbing to old age.

To help old rats sustain themselves, they can get special high nutrition treats.

Some treats, that are usually only meant to be given in moderation, can help rattie oldies keep their body weight, such as avocado, nuts and seeds.

If just the rattie oldies get to eat it!

Surely, if there are some younger pet rats around, they come running to steal away the treats.

Like in this picture, where a curious nose is ready to check out the oldies’ rattie food.

Luckily, Milka and Cinnamonkey are almost done, as they follow the motto: Share Snack – Double Taste!

We’re back to loadshedding again! Everyone knows this, it’s all over the news.

Yet, one company seems to be blissfully dreaming on that scheduling powercuts is a perfectly normal practice. And thus, Eskom doesn’t even warn about the upcoming loadshedding:

This morning at 07:42 I wanted to check if loadshedding is indeed happening and thought going straight to the source would give me the answer.

Instead I’m just presented with “We are currently NOT LOAD SHEDDING.”

Usability Fail: Even though it’s clear loadshedding will start at 9am, at 07:42 Eskom does not warn about this and instead only informs they are “currently NOT LOAD SHEDDING”.

It’s true, Eskom are not loadshedding before 9am. But they know they are going to, so it’d be helpful to get that information in order to plan ahead.

Like the City of Cape Town, who gives really good advice:

Load-shedding active: 17 Oct
Stage 2 active between 09:00 – 23:00 for Eskom-supplied customers, and Stage 1 for City-supplied customers. Check the schedule for times and areas affected, and be prepared for outages.”

This is the information I need: Loadshedding is active, the time affected, schedules to check and how to prepare. Thanks to City of Cape Town for presenting it all at a glance.

We are Bellevue College students partnering with Seattle Humane, an impact non-profit organization, with their mission to find homes for the animals in their shelter that are normally considered "unadoptable." Seattle Humane is unlike any animal shelter. They take in animals no matter the breed, age, or physical condition and hold them for as long as it'll take them to find proper homes for these animals. Their hard work and care is exactly what we need to create a better environment for the animals we love. Please follow our instagram page @bcforhumane for more animals in need of a home.
