Rat City is reaching new heights!

When I #ratsit I get to look after different ratties from different clans.

Rats have quite a strict hierarchy. When there are more than one clan around, rats might display agonistic behavior to keep the order.

At the same time, they’re super intrigued to get to know new ratties and want to check them out.

The solution: Rat City!

Keeping the different rat cages close to each other, but in a safe distance, means the ratties get to interact, but not to fight.

The conflict handling through bars is quite amusing to watch, and luckily they’ll get tired of it eventually.

So far my rats have successfully integrated. It might take a week, but in the end rats prefer to get along and will find a way to compromise.

Ratties Ratatouille and Cappuccino love the Watermelon Sticks!

Ratties Ratatouille and Cappuccino love the Watermelon Sticks!

Did you know how healthy watermelon rind is? Besides that it’s completely edible, like with most veggies and fruits, many of the nutritions sit in the skin!

It’d be a shame to simply throw it away…

But as a rattie owner you don’t have to! Instead prepare a yummy healthy rattie treat:

Recipe: Watermelon Sticks

– Watermelon rind: After cutting half moon slices out of the watermelon flesh, whatever is left over.

Cut the watermelon rind into dice sized squares, leaving the remaining watermelon flesh to stick out.

Bonus tip:

On hot days serve fresh out of the fridge to cool down your ratties.

Super practical: For quick and easy rattie treats simply freeze a veggie mix and defrost on the day of feeding.

As a RatSitter I get a lot of inspiration from other rattie moms. This idea comes from Chantal Adler. 🙂

Here’s a great #RattieTip if you like to feed your pet rats healthy fresh food, but don’t always have the time to prepare it every day:

Recipe: Frozen #Rattie #Treats!

  • Mix of veggies: for example peas, sweetcorn

  • Cooked rice

Simply mix together your rat’s favourite veggies with rice. It’s important that it stays granular, so small portions can be easily broken off to defrost for the rattie meal.

Peas and corn can be added raw to the mix, but rats seem to prefer broccoli, cauliflower and other cabbage cooked. Other root, stem and squash vegetables, such as potatoes, carrots, pumpkin, should also be cooked. Make sure the mix doesn’t get mushy – that just ends in a mess when it defrosts.

Bonus Tip:

On hot days you can serve the veggie mix still frozen to your ratties. They will appreciate cooling down by snacking on some ice pops. 🙂

Making your website accessible and inclusive for everyone should be a standard requirement.

Making your website accessible and inclusive for everyone should be a standard requirement.

Just in case: If you do need to know why, please read: Benefits of providing information on the internet for blind people.

Web accessibility refers to the inclusive practice of removing barriers that prevent interaction with, or access to websites, by people with disabilities. When sites are correctly designed, developed and edited, all users have equal access to information and functionality.

We all know what wealth of information the internet is offering: From price comparisons and product reviews, to virtual maps and how-to instructions, to online research and e-learning – the possibilities are endless.

All that is needed is access.

And that does not just mean the access to internet, but also an accessible internet.

Both of which South Africa is currently lacking. While there is an effort to close the digital gap, awareness about web accessibility is low.

And it’s so easy!

With ready-made themes, freely available tutorials and simple to use meta data editors, all we got to do is comply with the W3C Web Accessibility guidelines which were launched back in 1997.

While this is currently only based on good will in South Africa, many countries around the world have adopted legislation to ensure the internet is inclusive. In fact, there are numerous cases where companies have been successfully sued because their website was not accessible.

In 2000, an Australian blind man won a court case against the Sydney Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games (SOCOG). This was the first successful case under Disability Discrimination Act 1992 because SOCOG had failed to make their official website, Sydney Olympic Games, adequately accessible to blind users.

In 2008 the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities came into effect. Article 9 commits signatories to provide for full accessibility to roads, buildings, and information, which includes website design.

Just recently, on 2 December 2016, the European Parliament published the first EU-wide rules to make public sector websites and apps more accessible. This is expected to be followed by a European Accessibility Act.

Time for South Africa to follow suit? 😮

The 6th December is Nikolaus! Happy Nikolausi! :)

The 6th December is Nikolaus Day! Happy Nikolausi! 🙂

Easter Bunny!

Ah you see, this is not the Easter Bunny, this is the Nikolausi.

Easter Bunny!

No no, this is the Nikolausi. You see, Easter Bunny has fluffy puffy ears. But the Nikolausi has a nice red hat.

Easter Bunny!

No, you’re getting this wrong, my sweetie. The Easter Bunny hides the easter eggs. But the Nikolausi brings fruits and nuts to all the good children who behave well.

Easter Bunny!

No! You hear me? This is the Nikolausi. The N-i-k-o-l-a-u-s-i. Celebrating Saint Nicholas’ Day children put their boots out to be filled with gifts by the NIKOLAUSI.

Easter Bunny!

For Christ’s sake! It’s the NIKOLAUSI! The NIKOLAUSI! How many times must I say it: IT’S THE NIKOLAUSI!!!

… Easter Bunny …

Ah what the hell, they probably only change the wrapper and reuse the chocolate as the Easter Bunny anyway…

Easter Bunny?

Inspired by Gerhard Polt‘s “Nikolausi“.

BC x Seattle Humane

We are Bellevue College students partnering with Seattle Humane, an impact non-profit organization, with their mission to find homes for the animals in their shelter that are normally considered "unadoptable." Seattle Humane is unlike any animal shelter. They take in animals no matter the breed, age, or physical condition and hold them for as long as it'll take them to find proper homes for these animals. Their hard work and care is exactly what we need to create a better environment for the animals we love. Please follow our instagram page @bcforhumane for more animals in need of a home.
