Creative Nestlings & Creator presented Conversations On Creativity: Monetizing Your Platform, in partnership with MINI + URBAN X.

How many times do you go to a finance related event and meet an all female panel?

Together they shared their lessons learned about money.

From left to right:

Host Dinika Govender, Shakirah Dramat, Owethu Makhathini, Bongeka Masango, Jade de Waal

The all female discussion panel - at Conversations On Creativity: Monetizing Your Platform.

The all female discussion panel – at Conversations On Creativity: Monetizing Your Platform.

What platforms can you monetise?

–  Two-sided communications: audiences and brands

–  Social Media means Personal Brand creation.

–  YouTube or Vimeo offer video channel monetisation.

–  Something you love can turn into profit.

–  Always being challenged by the people around you makes you strive further.

How to set a rate

–  Money is still a taboo. Open up and talk about it.

–  What is the capacity of the people within the business? Fee can be based on that.

–  What is the real cost of what you do? Including everything. Also take into account overheads and upfront money.

–  The client pays for years of experience, not for the time it takes.

–  Don’t budge on your rate! The cheapest clients can have the most expensive taste.

–  Extracting value does not have to be in money, maybe covering travel costs or similar deals can be made.

–  You can ask for a better rate and you must ask and don’t stop asking.

–  In order to mitigate risk: Ask for 50% upfront.

–  How to justify your rate: Because it supports a whole network of professionals.

–  Have (or pretend to have) an agent who negotiates your rate on behalf of you.

–  Have (or pretend to have) an invoice department who collects your money on your behalf.

Prepare for pitching your business

–  What does your client need? What solution can you offer?

–  Explain your / your followers’ value.

–  Have your basics covered. Be very familiar with your admin. Get your certificates, be registered at correct departments and on important platforms.

–  Do your homework and research.

–  Offer Added-On Values.

After the main conversation the questions were opened up to the audience:

A very interactive event, where everyone could learn from real experiences being shared.

As part of Museum Night Cape Town the Iziko Museum invited to a Workshop: Hunter-gatherer food culture of the first humans on planet Earth.

Truida Prekel gave a talk on gathering from nature. Together with Sue Kingma she explained the indigenous foods on offer at the workshop:

This introduction to indigenous plants was very important, as all this food looked very exotic:

But of course, some basic survival skills are needed to make use of edible plants in nature. Dr Wallace Vosloo explains how to test if a plant is poisonous or not:

Dr Wallace Vosloo at the Museum Night Cape Town Workshop: Hunter-gatherer food culture of the first humans on planet Earth

Dr Wallace Vosloo at the Museum Night Cape Town Workshop: Hunter-gatherer food culture of the first humans on planet Earth

Then we were allowed to taste the plants we so easily walk by, not knowing how beneficial they are.

Dune Spinach:

Purslane:

Sour fig:

Jelly Melon or African Horned Cucumber:

Num-num:

Prickly Pear in different colours – red, orange and white:

With new strength from the snack break, attendees were invited to participate in survival activities.

Rope Making:

Fire Making:

A fun night out that has taught me to look at weeds around this country with different eyes.

Ramon Alexander is a master of Cape Jazz, making him a local icon in the South African music scene.

Nonetheless the reach of his sound is limitless: His compositions take you places far far away.

Especially at an intimate venue like The Daily Music Show:

It’s almost meditative listening to the Ramon Alexander Quartet: Like a raindrop that finds its way into the river winding into the ocean you can follow his songs like a story or a journey and get immersed fully because you can trust the band to bring you back to the beginning with a feeling of uplift.

Simply watching Ramon Alexander‘s hands glide over the keys is mesmerising:

Ramon Alexander, master of Cape Jazz, is starring at The Daily Music Show!

Combining a deep sense of groove with strong lyricism, Ramon’s band showcases both:  up-and-coming and seasoned musicians.

His sometimes contradictory quirky sense of humour and his reverence for his craft are on full display whenever he steps on stage and slides behind the keys.

It makes Ramon a rare find: a brilliant musician as well as an exciting live performer, but foremost a marvelous human being!

I could watch our puppies play all day long.

Here all 4 dogs manage to play tug of war together. – Because that’s a real nice jumper they’re tearing apart. 😉

All 4 dogs are playing tug of war with an old jumper.

The sweater was broken beyond repair, so it became our dogs’ toy.

For months they used it as a blankie, but then came the moment when this happened:

The jumper did end up semi sleeveless but other than that no-one got harmed. 😀

If you were presented with a new feature called ‘Copy’ do you think you’d know what it does?

Most people are probably familiar with the copy and paste function.

Still, when this is offered as a new component in your edit menu, it needs to be announced to the user.

Great example: Introducing a new tool

WordPress introduces its new copy tool: Need to duplicate a post or page? Hover over the title of your post or page and click “Copy”.

WordPress introduces its new copy tool: Need to duplicate a post or page? Hover over the title of your post or page and click “Copy”.

This little piece of content works well, because it contains

3 good practices of Value Added Content (VAC):

1.  KISS message: A simple screengrab that shows what to expect and a straight forward one-liner with clear instructions is all that is needed to create awareness for a change of the control panel.

2.  Call to Action: In case this is not enough explanation, there’s a link to click to learn more.

3.  Interaction: For this notification to disappear, the user needs to actively close the pop-up window. This could count as an indiction they saw the message.

Trudy Rushin live at The Daily Music Show: Meaningful lyrics with the wit to make you laugh.

What Trudy Rushin has to say is worth listening to.

Especially as she packages it so well, it’s real easy listening.

In two ways: Her music is soft and smooth with an underlying upbeat, topped with light-hearted lyrics that make you smile when you get the subtle puns.

Trudy Rushin always has a joke on her lips, like when she commented on Alistair Andrews‘ bass ukulele: “This is what happens when you put a guitar into the washing machine.”

Alistair Andrews‘ solo on the bass ukulele:

Trudy Rushin‘s lyrics are sharp and witty, not needing many words to convey a deeper meaning.

Having been surprised by the sheer volume of the Investec Cape Town Art Fair, I returned to catch up on the over 100 exhibitors. Again I didn’t make it through all the art that is on offer.

The mix of established and new artists, African and European galleries, modern and traditional crafts is inspirational as they all have one thing in common: A message beneath the creativity.

I’ve been to many vernissages, some of which for big art fairs.

In comparison I must say: There’s a whole lot of art at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair.

I had underestimated the grandness as in number of exhibitors and amount of friends I’d bump into. 😉

So I only made it to the VIP Lounge, having seen 20 galleries.

But that is only about one fifth of what the Investec Cape Town Art Fair has to offer.

First impressions at the Investec Cape Town Vernissage

Cape Town, a poster child for beating the water crisis.

In a combined effort to save water, we collected rain, watered our plants with dishwater, did the bucket dance and much more.

But only for the next crisis to hit South Africa: Stage 4 Loadshedding.

Only in South Africa: Businesses advertise they can serve their customers despite loadshedding. How about one business, Eskom, doing their job so others don't have to suffer.

Only in South Africa: Businesses advertise they can serve their customers despite loadshedding. How about one business, Eskom, doing their job so others don’t have to suffer.

South Africans are resilient and simply do what is necessary to survive.

So we’ll shoulder this one too, despite financial losses, potential health dangers and crime risks and of course personal inconveniences.

It is not often that people send letters anymore.

It has become an art that mainly creative people seem to take up.

Everyone else has no time for this old-fashioned last-century form of communication.

Yet, receiving a letter is such a wonderful thing!

It seems, that is also something people who undertake the art of writing a letter understand.

Because for the real crafty ones, the letter starts already on the outside.

Like this hand-made Christmas card, that features a hand-drawn snowman – on the envelope.

What a lovely drawing! Such special Christmas post if the envelope has already such a personal touch.

Media 24 offered a deep-dive into mobile advertising with their first 24.com Mobile Study presentation.

The context of the study was that significant mobile growth was noted in the consumption of 24.com, but advertising revenue is still most prominent on desktop.

This shows that the user is ahead of the game with mobile browsing whereas the advertising industry is lagging behind.

To eliminate all doubts of investing in mobile advertising, 24.com shared insightful results, such as:

In 24.com’s study of mobile advertising campaigns, after significant exposure they ran a survey in place of the ad, establishing an average brand uplift of almost 8%.
