South Africa’s problem? The lockdown shows: Alcohol

Statistics indicate the lockdown in South Africa had a positive effect on crime and injuries:

Murder cases down by 72%.

A roughly 50% drop in rape and sexual assault cases against women.

Hospital trauma admissions have decreased by 66%.

Bheki Cele cites alcohol ban for drastic drop in murders, rapes, hijackings but researchers argue this is not related to the alcohol ban.

However, since the alcohol ban was lifted, numbers have shot up again:

The Eastern Cape recorded 3 141 cases linked to alcohol.

18 alcohol-related deaths in Gauteng.

The City of Cape Town’s Traffic Service has recorded a steady increase in drunk driving.

Nationally a doubling in trauma admissions, most appeared to be alcohol-related.
