“Here, let me help you.”

“Ah, that’s ok. I do the MOOP Swoop every bin day. It’s actually quite quick, don’t worry.”

“Such a shame with the Cape Town wind: Everything you clean up today, it’s just the same tomorrow.”

“Yes, but if I didn’t clean it today, it’d be worse tomorrow.”

One man's trash is another man's treasure: I needed 3 folders and here they are.

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure: I needed 3 folders and here they are.

Or shall I write ‘Ordner from the universe’ as in the German word for ‘folder’?

Because sometimes the universe works in surprising ways:

I was cleaning up my office stuff, but couldn’t pack it away properly, as I needed some folders.

I know I have folders somewhere in our packed things, but until we’ve properly unpacked everything I don’t know where to find them. So I’m a bit reluctant to buy new folders.

In the meantime however I sorted my documents into 3 piles = 3 folders.

So as I’m leaving the house for a doctor’s appointment I’m thinking: 3 folders is all I need.

After the hospital appointment I wanted to shop our groceries, but cycling down from Groote Schuur I landed up by the main road first, needing to cut back to the supermarket.

This was random, normally I would have turned right earlier to get straight to the parking lot.

So now that I had already lost my way of most efficient route I decided to take a shortcut through the vegetation.

And lo and behold: I stumble across 3 discarded folders.

Somebody must’ve dumped their old office equipment in the bush. But there was nothing wrong with it!

I still can’t believe this coincidence, because it is so precise in its execution: It was always just about 3 folders.

As if I had ordered them from the universe!

So, how do you like living in Lower Woodstock?

I like it. I enjoy living in this street. The neighbours are friendly. It’s safe to cycle.

What about the crime?

Crime is an issue everywhere in South Africa.

What about the dirt?

We can all help clean it up by doing a MOOP swoop.

And the children? What about the noise?

You mean the kids playing soccer on the empty plot next door? But that’s the best part!

Illegal Dumping on the corner of Greatmore and York Street.

Illegal Dumping on the corner of Greatmore and York Street.

Every Friday, as it’s bin day, I clean up all the rubbish in our neighbourhood.

The more frustrating it is to find someone dumped their waste on the otherwise relatively clean abandoned plot.

It seems empty property in Cape Town attracts crime.

In the meantime the kids have nowhere to play soccer and are forced to kick their ball around next to used pampers and condoms.

Why not kill two birds with one stone and turn neglected areas into much needed green space?

Where children have nowhere but the streets to play, it should be a crime to leave public space to rot.

#MoopSwoop Find: Ornamental bead wire cross

#MoopSwoop Find: Ornamental bead wire cross

Doing my weekly #MoopSwoop, I found this ornamental bead wire cross.

I’m not Christian, so I was wondering what the meaning of the cross actually is, and came across this:

The Latin Cross

also called the Roman, Protestant, Western or Plain Cross

Latin Cross

The Latin cross (crux ordinaria) is a stipe (upright post) with a patibulum (horizontal beam) inserted at right-angles. It is a symbol of Christianity even though it was used as a Pagan symbol for millennia before the foundation of the Christian Church.

As a Pagan symbol it has been found in China and African countries. It appears on Scandinavian Bronze Age stones depicting the destructive hammer of Thor, their god of thunder and war. It is regarded a magical symbol, bringing good luck and diverting evil. Rock carvings of the cross have been interpreted as a solar symbol, or a symbol of earth with its points representing north, south, east, and west.

To alchemists, the cross was a symbol of the four ‘classical elements’: air, earth, fire, water. Elsewhere, the cross variously symbolised health, fertility, life, immortality, the union of heaven and earth, spirit and matter, the sun and the stars.

That sounds good enough for me to keep it as a good omen and hang it up somewhere in our garden. 🙂

#MoopSwoop Find: Seed packets that flew into our courtyard. Thanks for that, this will grow nicely in our garden. :)

#MoopSwoop Find: Seed packets that flew into our courtyard. Thanks for that, this will grow nicely in our garden. 🙂

This was odd: I didn’t realise at first these seed packets were #MoopSwoop finds, because my husband had just been given some by his brother and I thought the Woodstock wind had somehow gotten hold of and dispersed them.

But when I showed my husband the salvaged seed packets, he said they were not his.

So, whoever lost or dumped these seed packets: They made it safe and sound into our courtyard and will surely be of good use in our urban garden.

And thanks to the Woodstock wind for bringing them to us. 🙂

Half a Rand I found in a matter of days. This is real money, free for the taking!

Half a Rand! I found these coins in a matter of days. This is real money, free for the taking!

One of the things I keep on finding plenty of is: Money!

It makes me wonder about the general attitude towards money, if nobody is even bothered to pick it up when it’s free.

In Germany we used to say “Wer den Pfennig nicht ehrt, ist des Talers nicht wert.“ – kind of “If you don’t honour the cent, you don’t deserve the euro.” and in the UK it went “Take care of the pennies and the pounds will take care of themselves.”

And what about the lucky penny? Is this not something worthwhile picking up?

Apparently not if you value your time in relation to the American minimum wage.

But that is of course idle thoughtexperimenting, because it’s not like you don’t get paid your ususal salary for the duration of you picking up a penny.

That penny on the street is real money, and it adds real value to your earnings: Exactly 1 penny, money for free!

And if you don’t want to keep it, giving away a lucky penny brings double luck! Or at least a smile on the recipient’s face. 😀

And the good you’re doing keeps on getting better:

You help your economy not to lose money, especially as the cent is more expensive to make than its value, meaning you could actually sell it for a better price in copper if you bring it to the scrap yard. 😮

So, next time you see money on the street, remember:

“Find a penny, pick it up. All day long, you’ll have good luck.” 🙂
