Take the 4 R pledge today!

Take the 4 R pledge today!

It’s #PlasticFreeJuly, which encourages us to #ChooseToRefuse #SingleUsePlastic.

It’s tough to avoid plastic, it’s simply everywhere. And it’s even tougher to save the planet.

But we need to start somewhere. We all can do our bit.

Take the 4 Rs pledge:

REFUSE disposable plastic whenever and wherever possible.
Choose items that are not packaged in plastic, and carry your own bags, containers and utensils. Say ‘no straw, please.’

REDUCE your plastic footprint.
Cut down on your consumption of goods that contain excessive plastic packaging and parts. If it will leave behind plastic trash, don’t buy it.

REUSE durable, non-toxic straws, utensils, to-go containers, bottles, bags, and other everyday items.
Choose glass, paper, stainless steel, wood, ceramic and bamboo over plastic.

RECYCLE what you can’t refuse, reduce or reuse.
Pay attention to the entire life cycle of items you bring into your life, from source to manufacturing to distribution to disposal.

If you thought about reducing your contribution to the plastic pollution, but didn’t know where to begin, here’s a great challenge to join and start off with:

Take the Plastic Free July challenge!

Take the #PlasticFreeJuly challenge and #ChooseToRefuse #SingleUsePlastic!

Take the #PlasticFreeJuly challenge and #ChooseToRefuse #SingleUsePlastic!

Plastic Free July is a global yearly challenge where millions of people give up single-use plastic during the month of July.

It aims to raise awareness of the amount of single-use disposable plastic items in our lives and challenges people to do something about it.

Plastic Free July provides resources and ideas to help reduce single-use plastic waste everyday at home, work, school, and even at your local café.

You can choose to commit for a day or the entire month or forever.

You can target the top 4 worst plastic items: plastic bags, plastic bottles, plastic straws and plastic coffee cups, or #ChooseToRefuse #SingleUsePlastic altogether.

You can make changes at home, at work, and in your local community.

Whatever you do, start today! Make the pledge now.

What is it about places being abused as dumps and toilets just because they appear abandoned?

Instead of utilising these spaces for the community, some lazy people bring down the entire neighbourhood by dumping, and I’m not just referring to waste, but also literally shit.

27 Greatmore Street has turned into a health hazard with rat, cockroach and fly infestations, and a fire hazard with all the rubbish piling up.

27 Greatmore Street is a dump and toilet: Full of waste and feces.

27 Greatmore Street is a dump and toilet: Full of waste and feces.

We’ve had enough of the City of Cape Town and the owner Mr Allie dodging responsibility:

In South Africa, if you want something done, you best take care of it yourself, it seems.

We’ve been regularly trying to keep Woodstock clean: Every bin day I collect all rubbish flying around our hood until our bin is full.
But it takes more: We also do bigger cleanups a couple of times a year.

This one was a major cleanup, in 2 days’ work we collected about 60 rubble bags full of waste.

And we’re nowhere near clearing the abandoned plot: Over the years of neglect, about 2m of rubble and rubbish accumulated, posing serious damage to the surrounding houses through rising damp.

Woodstock Cleanup: It takes personal initiative to get Woodstock clean.

Woodstock Cleanup: It takes personal initiative to get Woodstock clean.

Well, the worst is done – for now.

Hopefully by securing and watching the abandoned plot, it won’t get so bad again.

Now we need more bags to continue!

Plastic everywhere: Plastic pollution is a global crisis. – Photo Credit: Chris Jordan / US Fish and Wildlife Service

April 22nd is Earth Day.

The outlook is bleak. Our planet is dying and it’s our fault. Weltschmerz seeps in easily.

One of the major problems we all contribute to is plastic.

Yet, it is so easy to avoid using plastic bags.

The Earth Day movement has launched a Plastic Pollution Calculator: www.earthday.org/plastic-calculator.

Use this calculator to learn how much plastic you waste.

In addition you can pledge to reduce your plastic consumption.

Plastic pollution is a global crisis. Be the change. Stop using plastic!

“Here, let me help you.”

“Ah, that’s ok. I do the MOOP Swoop every bin day. It’s actually quite quick, don’t worry.”

“Such a shame with the Cape Town wind: Everything you clean up today, it’s just the same tomorrow.”

“Yes, but if I didn’t clean it today, it’d be worse tomorrow.”

Plastic Bags: The Ocean's Deadliest Predator.

Plastic Bags: The Ocean’s Deadliest Predator.

I cannot remember ever buying a plastic bag.

But we started early with the whole environmentally friendly idea in Germany.
I was a teenager when we had the green revolution and I always used proper bags or at least reusable shopping bags.

Then I moved to the UK where they still gave away free plastic bags in the supermarkets.
We used them as our bin bags and still accumulated so many that I regularly brought a whole bunch of them back to the supermarket for recycling.

Then I moved to South Africa. Here plastic bags are flying around on the streets and get caught in barbwire on every other house where they form a grotesque flag waving our own waste at us.
The cashiers don’t even offer me a plastic bag anymore, they know by now that “we really shouldn’t use them, they’re so bad for the environment.”
Although plastic bags cost something, be it ‘only’ 50 cents, I see people buying them for one item, walk out, take the item out of the bag and throw the bag on the street.

It’s so easy to never buy a plastic bag ever again and save a fair share of money:

Simply use a reusable shopping bag. Any bag can do really, practical are a backpack or shoulder bag.

At least reuse the plastic bags you already have. It’s surprising how long they last. Always keep one folded up in your pocket, you never know when you might need it.

Even without buying plastic bags ever, I still get them given at so many places that I never run out of bin bags.

Everything is packaged in plastic too, so I never run out of dog poop bags either.

I do a weekly MOOP Swoop and pick up so many clean and intact plastic bags that my dog poop bag pile never gets depleted.

It can take 100 years for a plastic bag to break down, but it never disappears: It only disintegrates into toxic chemicals such as bisphenol A (BPA) and PS oligomer.

Please! Don’t buy plastic bags!

BC x Seattle Humane

We are Bellevue College students partnering with Seattle Humane, an impact non-profit organization, with their mission to find homes for the animals in their shelter that are normally considered "unadoptable." Seattle Humane is unlike any animal shelter. They take in animals no matter the breed, age, or physical condition and hold them for as long as it'll take them to find proper homes for these animals. Their hard work and care is exactly what we need to create a better environment for the animals we love. Please follow our instagram page @bcforhumane for more animals in need of a home.
