Getting writing done is all about self-discipline, something that creative minds are not necessarily made for.

The most exhilarating writing can be the moment when inspiration hits and you can’t write fast enough to get it all down on paper.

But how often does this really happen? And when do we actually allow it to happen?

As Stephen King puts it: “Amateurs sit and wait for inspiration, the rest of us just get up and go to work.” in ‘On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft’.

A Write-Up helps you to get up and do it.

This is why Write-Ups work:

1) You’re not alone
Writing can be a very lonesome activity. The actual writing process mostly comes down to one person doing just that: writing. The good news is that you can write alongside others. So while you’re still concentrating on your own writing, you know others are there for support.

2) There is structure
The hardest thing is to get going. A Write-Up kick-starts you into the process. It presents you with a clear routine that doesn’t give you other options. The more you do it, the more you can practice your own ritual that gets the writing juices flowing.

3) You take on accountability
You can fool yourself, but not so easily others. If you state what you want to write before the Write-Up and then plan to read it out after the Write-Up, you better come up with something. This productive pressure can help you to just do it.

4) There is a deadline
If we have time, we take time. If you know you only have a limited amount of time available, somehow you get it done. We can set deadlines for ourselves with the possibility of endless extensions, or we can stick to the deadline set by a Write-Up.

5) You get feedback
Especially creative writing can be tough when there is no immediate feedback. So you write and write and write but how do you know if it is any good? At a Write-Up you get the chance to read it out aloud and realise the impact of your writing.

If you fancy yourself as a writer or if you just have to get that writing done join a Write-Up and see where it takes you. Any writing goes at a Write-Up: Delve into free flow, continue your novel, work on that report or even write code / lyrics / whatever you feel like.

It is really about just doing it and making writing an active part of your life.
